Our #1 Tip for Traveling Cheap!

When you land on our Home Page, you see the statement “Fulfill your dream and travel the world… it’s cheaper than you think!” So this week we’re exposing our #1 tip on how we do this. Are you ready? It’s HOUSESITTING…big surprise!

What started out as a casual “let’s do this for maybe 2 or 3 months a year” has changed dramatically to equal over 40 weeks for 2017. And 2018 has us filling up quickly already…with more than 70% of our year booked up so far.

We talked about housesitting in our post “What’s This Housesitting Thing?” and again in “Exciting News”, but today we’re going to hit the topic a little harder with more detail, and we hope to excite and entice you into looking at this very enriching way of living as an option for you in retirement (or even before that!).

Our way of housesitting to date has involved the care of pets. We’re big fans of furry creatures (and feathered ones too, although I have a tiny, oh Hell, a rather large fear of birds, but chickens don’t count…they’re so entertaining!). Liking animals is MANDATORY, big time, if you want to do it how we do it. Homeowners are in love with their fur children, and they will see right through you if you try to pull the wool (no pun intended) over their eyes! Don’t like animals? Then don’t take this route…there are a lot more ways to travel cheaply while being true to yourself and keeping on the up and up. Don’t worry, we’ll be offering more tips and strategies for traveling on the cheap in future posts.

Trusted Housesitters

We use Trustedhousesitters.com for all of our housesitting assignments. For us, they are top-notch, giving us the support and resources that we need all in one place. We’re part of the Trustedhousesitters Ambassador Team, and what that means is that we promote the win/win concept of free house and pet sitting for the homeowners, while we, (and all) the housesitters, get free accommodations in return. That’s HUGE!

The Math

So, let’s do some math here. We are in the UK for a total of 114 days and we had to pay for a total of 3 nights’ accommodations. We spent 2 nights in an Airbnb in Edinburgh, Scotland at $162.50 per night, which is a very reasonable price (most were over $200). Another night in Brighton cost us $174.00. So that left us with 111 nights of housesitting, and instead of paying $162.50 per night (taking above rates from Edinburgh) we paid nothing and saved over $18,000.00!!

Our airfare to get here? Less than $1,000.00 because our Visa points gave one of us a free return flight (that’s a whole other post). Our strategy for travel abroad has to take into account the costs to get to our destination, so we make sure that we stay long enough to justify those costs. Jet setting around every couple of weeks just isn’t financially savvy. So, $1,000.00 for a four month jaunt to the UK was a totally feasible expense to us.

The cost of an annual membership for housesitters through Trustedhousesitters.com for us came to just under $80. That was after a 20% discount (which you will receive also if you join via our banners and “Join” buttons on our site), and I believe it’s another $29 to upgrade to a Homeowners membership. We don’t have a home, so we don’t have this added portion. That’s less than the cost of one night in a hotel… totally worth every penny.

Housesitting for You

We’ll be posting some very specific, helpful tips on a separate “Housesitting” page shortly that relates to such topics as setting up a profile, border crossing (we never lie!), and basically how to stand out amongst the crowd of sitters out there. You can also shoot us an email at vagabondretirees@gmail.com if you need to engage our services for setting up a knock out profile page, or if you need assistance in putting together an awesome application letter to potential homeowners through the Trustedhousesitters website.

So, even if you’re not retired, but love animals, then housesitting could be for you for your next holiday…whether that’s going abroad or staying in your own backyard. You can have the time of your life “localizing”, even for a week or 2 at a time. We’d love for you to talk to us, to comment and ask questions if you’re intrigued about our housesitting lifestyle. And in the meantime, take advantage of your discount and Join the Trustedhousesitters family! It’s money well spent.

Happy Trails

Linda & Mark
